Menemen is a classic Turkish Breakfast made with eggs, peppers and tomatoes. It is thought to originate from the place the dish takes its name from, Menemen in the North of Izmir. The original name for the dish is Şakşuka. Menemen has travelled the world as people from Turkey immigrated and travelled and can be found in many different disguises. The North African dish skakhshuka is thought to originate from Menemen as the word comes from the original name Şakşuka.
Menemen is not only a great breakfast, brunch dish but it lovely as a tasty lunch or light supper. Full of flavour and nutritious Menemen is easy to prepare and make even the most novice of cooks can make this dish and not fail. Many a student has survived their Uni years on Menemen, my husband for one.
This dish has many variants and everyone has their prefered way of preparing this dish. It always contains peppers, eggs and tomatoes some add in feta cheese, olives and garlic. Though primarily a vegetable dish some also add in thin slices of sucuk or meat.
Menemen is always served with bread and at home is served in the pan in the middle of the table for all to share. As the dish can be made spicy often yoghurt is served alongside the dish.
As already mentioned Menmen has so many variants that you can make this dish to your own taste. If you don’t like spicy food choose a bell pepper instead of a hot pepper and leave out the chilli flakes. You can add in Olives and Parsley or just have the basic eggs mixed with the tomato and peppers.
You can scramble the eggs or leave them whole. But always eat it with nice crusty bread or Turkish flat bread.
- Eggs – 3 -4
- Olive Oil or Butter – 2 Tablespoons
- Green Peppers (bell or carliston) – 3 finely chopped
- Tomatoes – 3 Medium Sized
- White Cheese, either Feta or Beyaz Peynir – 1/2 cup
- Pul Biber/chilli Flakes – 2 tsp or more
- Salt and Pepper – to taste
- Onion – 1 finely chopped
Add your oil or butter to the pan, then add in the onions and cook till soft, then add in the peppers and again cook until peppers begin to soften. Then add in your tomatoes, chopped and peeled, salt and pepper. Allow mixture to cook for 3 – 5 min or until the tomatoes begin to soften. If the mixture gets to dry add in a splash of water.
If you are scrambling your eggs, whisk them in a separate bowl then pour into the tomato, onion and pepper mixture. Add in the Chilli Flakes and mix eggs through the tomato mixture. Keep stirring till eggs are scrambled. You want to make sure your mixture doesn’t get to dry you want it to be a of a wet consistency.
Once eggs are cooked crumble your white cheese over the mixture and serve with bread and yoghurt.
You can use hot peppers for more spice or add in more Chilli flakes depending on how you like it.
You can also sprinkle chopped Parsley before serving and you can add in some chopped olive while cooking the Menemen.
