Üzüm Pekmezi | Turkish Grape Molasses

Üzüm Pekmezi is very popular here in Turkey and throughout the Middle East.  Üzüm Pekmezi is a thick dark molasses made from the juices of grapes.   Molasses can be made from sugar cane, sugar beets, mulberry, grapes, figs and carobs.  The thick sweet syrup is used in baking and served on its own as a dip or spread.

I knew little of the grape molasses here in Turkey expect that it is a good substitute for Treacle in cooking and that it is often mixed with Tahini and eaten on bread for breakfast a good energy provider for the day ahead.

During my pregnancy I have become anemic and also have low blood sugar.  I decided to do some research into foods that can be of help with each of these issues and I was surprised when I came across üzüm pekmezi.

I really shouldn’t be surprised by now about the benefits that most foods offer when studied but I did not expect the number of benefits from the grape molasses.

Grape Molasses contains a number of beneficial vitamins which include vitamin A, C and B6 and contain various minerals including potassium, calcium iron and magnesium.  Which are all excellent for a pregnant lady like me and also highly beneficial for children and with its sweet flavour also a great alternative to sugary foods often given to kids.

Not only does the üzüm pekmezi contain all these vitamins and minerals it also contains plant chemicals (phytochemicals) that may act as antioxidants.

Üzüm Pekmezi offers many great benefits through the vitamins and minerals and antioxidants but the main benefit is that it is a great source of iron and is very beneficial to anemic people.

The traditional way üzüm pekmezi is served here in Turkey is mixed with Tahini to make lovely thick sweet spread which is eaten with bread as a breakfast.

I have found if you add a dessert spoonful of üzüm pekmezi to a glass of milk it makes a lovely caramel flavour milkshake great as a drink at breakfast time or you can add it to hot milk as a bed time drink.

You can also use üzüm pekmezi in baking, in salads and in cooking to add flavour to stews and pastas.

The great thing about üzüm pekmezi is that it is so versatile and can be used in many ways and at the same time offers you many great health benefits.

      It can be bought in a Jar or normally you find them in a plastic bottle in the supermarkets. If you visit the Pazars or a breakfast shop here in Turkey you can get it in a plastic tub. Just depends where you buy it. You can find it online as well if you are living outside of Turkey.
