On our recent trip home to Dikili, I finally learned the art of Turkish Coffee Making. It’s not as difficult as you may think but to get a good cup of Turkish Coffee it takes a little skill and trial and error. I had made several attempts at home to make Turkish Coffee and the hubby had to test each of these attempts! When my sister in law offered to make some Turk Kahve, I was sent to the kitchen to learn the skill.
I am happy to say I passed my Turkish Coffee making diploma with flying colours. The hubby can now enjoy and nice cup of Turk Kahve after breakfast.
Here are 10 Turk Kahve facts:
Turkish Coffee, is called Turk Kahve, however it wasn’t until instant coffee (Nescafe) was introduced into Turkey that the phrase Turk Kahve came about. Up until that point it was just called Kahve.
Kahvaltı meaning breakfast and literally translated it means before coffee. After a good breakfast, tradition is to have a cup of Turk Kahve.
Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia in the 11th Century, it was then cultivated as a drink in Yemen in the 14th Century. This is where the Ottoman Governor of Yemen, Özdemir Pasha discovered coffee and brought it back to Turkey.
The Ottomans were the first to roast coffee beans over a fire and ground them down and then boil the grounds in boiling water. Creating the coffee drink that is now known worldwide as Turkish Coffee.
In 1544 the first coffee house Kiva Han was opened in Istanbul in the Tahtakale district after coffee became popular among the general public.
The left over grounds in the bottom of your cup can be used to tell your fortunate, just like tea leaves. The empty cup is turned upside down on the saucer and left for several minutes. The grains that have run down the sides of the cup are then read to find out what is in store for your future!
The pot that is used to make Turkish Coffee in is called a “Cezve”.
Turkish coffee can be made with just water or milk. Most people prefer to make it with milk.
To ask for Turkish coffee with milk say: sütlü kahve
To ask for Turkısh coffee without milk say: sütsüz kahve
Always serve Turk Kahve with a glass of water.
Tradition is when a bride is meeting her potential groom for the first time, she will make a cup of Turk Kahve and instead of adding sugar she adds salt. When the groom drinks the Kahve it will determine his character if he drinks without complaint he is thought to have a good character!
