Living in Turkey is not always easy, there are so many things to get used to, like customs and traditions, new language, paperwork, different foods and much more. At first its easy to get overwhelmed by it all and you might wonder what you have done.
But after a while you settle into a daily routine and you get used to a lot of what happens around you. However for many they never really settle here in Turkey and for some they hate their life here. Turkey isn’t for everyone and some will return home and others solider on.
One of the biggest issues I see is the way people compare Turkey to their home country and hold on to their prejudices.
I hear a lot from people about their problems they have here in Turkey and a lot of the times I would like to be frank and tell them to stop comparing everything to home and to let go of their preconceived ideas that they have of the way life should be.
There are a lot of customs and traditions that we are just not used to but that does not make them wrong or annoying. It does not mean we shouldn’t accept them and enjoy them. But if you get into your head how much you hate these traditions and ways of life, they will be forever a problem to you and you will never fully accept your life here.
When I first came to Turkey to live some of the new customs, like visiting my new born boy days after I got home or turning up unexpected and staying for hours and the way that as a women you are expected to do just about everything!
But I quickly realised that the people who came to visit me where paying their respects to our family, the visitors who turn up just thought it would be nice to see you and don’t want be rude by leaving to soon and having to do most the work is just the way life is here.
I could spend my days complaining and being annoyed at the ways and customs but then I would spend most my days unhappy. By accepting the way of life here, laughing or shrugging off the things that make you crazy, you will find life here is more enjoyable and you might just find yourself happy.
You also have to learn to stop comparing everything with things at home. Its very easy to give life back home a nice golden glow when you are not there. You forget how you complained about the Government, education, healthcare, traffic, people and I could go on.
Nothing here is perfect but neither are the things at home. There will be at times that you do wish that certain things where done like they are at home. But you are living in Turkey now and life is different here. By fighting against it you are just going to drive yourself mad.
It doesn’t mean you have to accept everything, maybe you can try and change the way things are done here, suggest alternatives to family and friends and work with your local community. But if thats not you then you have accept life as it is.
By letting go of your prejudices and by not comparing everything with life back home you will find life here easier and more enjoyable. Learn to go with the flow of life in Turkey and to enjoy the little quirks that the Traditions and Customs bring. Laugh or shrug when you find something that annoys you and move on. By doing these things you will settle into life here and you will start to enjoy your life here in Turkey.
Remember this is your home now, so make it your home and welcome all that is Turkey.
How do you deal with the differences in life here in Turkey to home?
