At times I really miss having a good gossip and a moan with someone in my own tongue, having a girlie shopping trip and just being purely British for a little while.
I am really glad we don’t live in an expat area, otherwise it would be to easy not to integrate into the community here in Adapazar?. I have made some lovely friends and I have some wonderful neighbours.
We regularly all meet up during the week for tea and a bit of a gossip but as I am just getting to grips with Turkish it can be hard work trying to communicate and understand what is being said and it is not as relaxed and easy at it would be with another expat.
The power of the internet has allowed me to stay in touch with my friends and family. I am not sure how I would have managed 10 or more years ago. It’s hard to think what it would be like living here with only a landline (maybe) and snail mail to communicate with. I do use my phone quite a lot though. I recently used a home voip phone service and that’s made calling my friends and family back home much easier. I just prefer to talk face to face via Skype or FaceTime.
I think my move here to Turkey would have been a lot harder not speaking with loved ones every week or being able to let my parents see our little boy via the internet.
You can say what you like about Facebook, but I am able to stay in touch daily with my parents and family all over the world. It has allowed me to feel that I am still connected to my family and in some ways it’s made us all a lot closer being able to keep up with each others day to day lives.
I adore Skype it allows me to see my parents once a week and now we have our little boy it lets his Grandparents get to see him grow up and not miss out on too much of his life. Without Skype or similar this would not be possible except through pictures or video.
Then there are the forums and online groups which I have joined, where I have met some fantastic people who are living here in Turkey. We are able to exchange notes, have a moan and of course we all understand life here so we can all sympathise with each other and help each other out.
I certainly don’t know what I would have done without the internet living here, my little life line out into the world. I can hear a lot of you screaming at me “get out into the real world live life in Turkey to the full”. I do live the full Turkish life here but the internet also allows me to keep in touch with all the ones that matter to me back home.
So thank you to all those innovative people out there that created the internet, Skype, Facebook and email. You have made life better for me and many expats who live here in Turkey.
Is the internet a life line for you? How do you stay in touch with family and friends?
